Cantaloupe Guts = Cardinal Food!

Just a real quick tip here for my environmentally inclined readers…What to do with those produce scraps? I never needed a compost pile because I have always had small pets to feast on all of the produce trimmings I have – and we go through a lot in this family. However, my guinea pigs lived a full life and passed away and my rabbit just recently passed a couple of months ago as well.

I am left with a cockatiel (Gram) that does not like produce – but loves junk food (crackers, chips and pop corn).

A gold fish (Nemo) which, come on, cannot eat scraps. Two dogs (Bulma and Jude) that one day will eat all sorts of weird scraps and the next day will leave me having to clean up the scraps I gave them off the floor.

And way way way too many pet mice for me to claim on the internet. (Don’t adopt a group of mice without sexing them first!)

Most of the produce scraps does get eaten by something with 4 legs, but the stuff that doesn’t, I throw outside to be eaten by whatever and to broken down by the Earth. My husband does not like it so much that I through the stuff in the yard, but I like watching the thing or two that eats the leftovers. Which brings me to my point! I dumped out the insides of a fresh cantaloupe next to the tree we have our bird feeders next to.

We have a cardinal pair that comes by throughout the year. Well, after a couple of hours of the guts being near the tree, I was able to get a glimpse of the male cardinal eating his fill of the guts and seeds. It was pretty nifty. If I see it again, I will try and get a picture and update you guys on it.

So just remember, someone likes the leafy parts of the cauliflower head or the juicy, soft insides of the cantaloupe. Maybe toss it outside and and be surprised at who appreciates it!

What is a surprising scrap/cut off that has attracted you some interesting attention with the outdoor creatures or your happy house hold pets? Let me know in the comments! Have a great one everybody! Until next time!
